Coffee GrinderWhy buy a coffee grinder? Well coffee roasters go to a lot of trouble to get coffee beans packed in the best possible condition. The coffee grinder is essential for one very good reason – once coffee beans are ground they go stale very quickly. I would argue that you cannot buy fresh ground coffee. By stale i mean that the essential oils which give coffee beans their distinctive flavour have dried out so stale coffee is just coffee with little flavour. How do you know if the coffee roasters have done a good job and got your coffee beans to you in tip top condition and fresh? Simply grind your coffee and whatever coffee maker you use, espresso machine, filter coffee machine, cafetiere, french press or other then freshly roasted coffee will have on the surface what Italians call the 'crema' This should be a creamy dark brown colour floating on top of the coffee. This is the oil and will give you the maximum result in flavour. If that oil is not there then the coffee is stale – it still may be black in colour but it will have little of the wonderful flavour associated with a good cup of coffee. |
